Another hugely successful Alternative Hair Show thrills and moves audience whilst raising £175,000 for Leukaemia research.
The 27th Alternative Hair Show was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 18th October 2009. The Alternative Hair Show is a fund-raising event for Leukaemia Research and all the teams and individuals appearing at the event do so entirely at their own cost. Support also comes from the international trade media and from companies that offer charity support including TIGI, Schwarzkopf, Keune, Medavita, Ales International and Aston & Fincher.
This year’s event began with a dedication to Guy Mascolo, one of the founders of Toni&Guy and TIGI haircare, who very sadly passed away earlier this year. Jayne Lewis-Orr, Editor in Chief and Publisher of Hairdressers Journal International introduced a film of Guy’s life and presented his widow Flora, who was accompanied onto the stage by Anthony and Pat Mascolo, with a special award designed and made by Dutch hairdressers Wiel and Ell Essers.
The theme for this year’s show was “Kaleidoscope” and the evening commenced as colourfully as it continued, with a performance of “Colour my World’ by children from the Sylvia Young Theatre School.
Tony Rizzo, founder of Alternative Hair welcomed the audience and thanked his charity supporters, press and the audience for their continual support of Alternative Hair. President of Alternative Hair, Anthony Mascolo and the Honorary President, Joshua Galvin echoed their thanks before welcoming onto the stage the leader of each of the presenting teams who were presented with an award to honour their appearance at this year’s show.
The creative teams showing during the evening were:-
From the England:- Mahogany
The first part of the Alternative Hair Show saw an impressive presentation from the entries of the International Visionary Award. Entry to the award is by photographic entry, the chosen finalists are then invited to present one model during a special section of the show. The 12 finalists heralded from the UK, Ireland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, Lithuania, Germany, Russia and the USA. Each contestant showed amazing talent and creativity and choosing one winner proved a hard task.
Unfortunately of course, there could only be one winner and the Alternative Hair International Visionary Award Winner was Alfie Booth from Andrew Collinge in England. Alfie will be invited to be part of the 2010 Alternative Hair Show presentations.
The 2nd part of the evening began with an Appeal by Cathy Gilman CEO of Leukaemia Research who introduced the emotional film made in September 2009 when families who have been touched by leukaemia were taken for a special weekend at Disneyland Paris, funded by Alternative Hair. Poignantly, one of the people who appeared on the film, a young Romanian in his 30s who spent the weekend with Alternative Hair in EuroDisney, lost his battle with leukaemia 2 weeks later. The film was dedicated to him.
The 12 finalists were:-
Since the 1960’s British Hairdressers have been highly respected for their creativity and excellence. A highlight of this year’s show was a magnificent presentation by the Alternative Hair British Greats:-

This exciting section of the show was presented by John Frieda who said:
“British hairdressers are renowned for their fantastic imagery, stage presentations, editorial session work, education and their commercial haircuts and avante-garde hairstyles, this group have influenced many hairdressers across the globe.”
John also took the opportunity of introducing the HAIRraising project, aimed at raising funds for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. This remarkable hospital treats chronically sick children from all over the UK and abroad.
At the end of an amazing, and very emotional evening, Tony welcomed all the Teams to join him on stage and announced that the event had raised a fantastic £175,000.
