Special praise goes to the Guildford Team who travelled from the furthest salon and turned out in force, well done for your commitment. PRESS RELEASE 2016

ODYSSEY

The 2016 Alternative Hair Show celebrates a long and epic journey.

Very aptly named “Odyssey”, the 34th Alternative Hair Show, is a time to remember the voyage Tony Rizzo and the many supportive international hair teams have taken since the very first Show at Camden Palace in October 1983.  Hairstyles have changed, fashion has taken its own spectacular journey and audiences have grown, but the enduring support from the professional world of hairdressing, the global trade media and the charity sponsors, remains constant.

We must remember, Alternative Hair exists to support funding and research for Leukaemia and many other blood cancers. Every show is held in memory of Valentino Rizzo, Tony and Maggie Rizzo’s first-born son, who sadly died of Leukaemia at the age of 2 years.

Since Tony began his relentless fight to raise funds to support the search for a cure for Leukaemia, as well as supporting families going through the traumatic experience of watching a child suffer, there have been vast changes in the treatment, care and survival rates.  Whilst results in the UK are now positive; in many parts of the world, children still have to suffer undignified and lonely treatment and the outcome is less optimistic. Whilst Tony sees opportunity and need to carry on fund-raising, Alternative Hair will continue its creative expedition.

The 2016 Alternative Hair Show is pleased to announce a fantastic, creative line-up of international artistic teams including:
Alta Moda – Ireland
Anne Veck – UK
Anteo Geminiani – Italy
Bundy Bundy – Austria
Carlo Bay – Italy
Dmitry Vinokurov – Russia

FEBRUARY 2016 ROUND OF GRANTS

FEBRUARY 2016 ROUND OF GRANTS

The Foundation is pleased to announce the following two grants:

Great Ormond Street Hospital – Drug Redeployment programme
Thanks to initial funding by the Foundation, this work is showing encouraging progress.  Two drugs that are in safe use for other conditions have already been identified in laboratory tests as having a potential for effective treatment of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia respectively. Not only is it hoped that these new drugs will be more effective at fighting leukaemia, but that there will be fewer side effects than existing treatments such as chemotherapy. The Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation started working with GOSH 3 years ago and since then DR de Boer’s team has made incredible progress. A drug called Mebendazole has shown tremendous results in killing off leukaemia cells leaving little traces tested on mice. This further grant of £50,000 will ensure that this vital work continues hopefully onward to successful clinical trials.

Bloodwise – Understanding the Fetal Origins of Infant and Childhood Leukaemia
The increasingly successful trend in treatment of childhood leukaemia has always been the target of the Alternative Hair movement. However, these promising results do not so far extend to infants (birth to 12 months).
There is growing evidence that many forms of childhood leukaemia start to develop in the womb. Immature blood cells in the foetus develop genetic faults that mean they are vulnerable to being transformed into leukaemia cells months or even years after birth. This ‘two hit’ theory of how childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) develops was uncovered by Professor Mell Greaves at the Institute of Cancer Research, whose work The Alternative Hair Charitable Trust has funded in the past. The findings have profoundly changed understanding of the origins of childhood leukaemia.
This key research project under the aegis of Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research) focuses upon this challenge and is designed to lead us forward to a better understanding of this crucial issue so that we can develop a strategy to extend far more effective treatments to infants with leukaemia. The Foundation made an initial grant of £65,000 last year and now follows up with a further £35,000.

Visionary Award Ireland 2016

We are pleased to invite entries to the Visionary Award Ireland 2016.

Since the successful launch of Visionary Award Ireland the standard of entries has been very high, resulting in applicants going on to reach the top 3 places in the International Visionary Award, held each year as a separate presentation within the Alternative Hair Show.

The Visionary Award concept developed from Alternative Hair Global President, Anthony Mascolo’s desire to recognize new talent and provide a platform for globally un-discovered hairdressers to show their work. By participating in the Alternative Hair Show, the Visionary Award finalists are able to push themselves creatively and inspire the audience, whilst raising important funds for the Alternative Hair charity ‘fighting Leukaemia’.
Tony Rizzo, founder of Alternative Hair and Anthony Mascolo are very pleased to continue with the additional Men’s category following the fast growing interest in men’s hair care and styling.

The categories are: Cut & Colour, Avant Garde and Men’s.
Closing date for entries is: 5th June 2016

Entry information can be found at www.alternativehair.org

The Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation are proud to announce a grant to GOSH

The Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation are proud to announce a grant to GOSH. The funds will support Dr Jasper de Boer’s five-year drug redeployment research project at GOSH and the UCL Institute of Child Health.

The programme aims to fast track the development of new drugs for leukaemia by trialling existing drugs used for other conditions. Not only is it hoped that these new drugs will be more effective at fighting leukaemia, but that there will also be fewer, kinder side effects than existing treatments such as chemotherapy.
The Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation started working with GOSH 3 years ago and since then Dr de Boer’s team has made incredible progress. A drug called Mebendazole has shown tremendous results in killing off leukaemia cells leaving little traces tested on mice.

Dr de Boer’s team has held discussions with Senior Consultant Haematologists at GOSH to ensure that Mebendazole moves swiftly from the bench to the bedside for clinical trials as soon as findings from the study have been published in 2016.

Alongside this work with Mebendazole, the team has also been working with a range of other drugs that have shown promise in screening; one in particular is showing great potential and Dr de Boer is currently working to secure a patent to protect the finding.

Plans are also in place to trial certain drugs in combination with each other to see if they are even more effective in fighting off leukaemia together than they are alone.

Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation grants Bloodwise £65,000

Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation grants Bloodwise £65,000

Bloodwise logo

The Alternative Hair Charitable Foundation fighting leukaemia kick starts its new grant making programme by donating £65,000 to Bloodwise (formerly Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research). The money will go towards a ground-breaking research project at the University of Oxford looking into the origins of infant leukaemia.

The money comes from funds raised at the 2015 Alternative Hair Show featuring presentations from top hairdressers across the globe and staged at the Royal Albert Hall on 11th October this year.

The Show, now in its 33rd year, has already contributed in excess of £9 million towards successful research into childhood leukaemia so that today more than nine out of 10 children survive this life threatening cancer of the blood.  However, these encouraging results do not extend to infants (those aged 12 months or less). This latest grant from the Foundation will support research under the auspices of Bloodwise that is designed to lead to a better understanding of this dilemma and so onwards to meeting the challenge it presents.

There is growing evidence that many forms of childhood leukaemia start to develop in the womb. Immature blood cells in the foetus develop genetic faults that mean they are vulnerable to being transformed into leukaemia cells months or even years after birth. This ‘two hit’ theory of how childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) develops was uncovered by Professor Mel Greaves at the Institute of Cancer Research, whose work The Alternative Hair Charitable Trust has funded in the past. The findings have profoundly changed understanding of the origins of childhood leukaemia.

The new University of Oxford project that The Alternative Hair Charitable Trust is funding is looking into infant ALL, which is biologically different to childhood ALL. This rare and aggressive type of leukaemia develops in children under 12 months of age, and, in contrast to leukaemia diagnosed in older children, still has very poor survival rates, with only just over half surviving for longer than five years. The chemotherapy needed is gruelling—some babies die from the side effects of their treatment and many survivors suffer health problems in later life.

Researchers led by Dr Anindita Roy will investigate immature foetal blood cells to see what happens to transform them into leukaemia cells shortly after birth. If successful, this project could provide crucial information on how infant ALL starts, an important step in designing better, kinder treatments for these babies and possibly even stopping these diseases developing in the first place.

Further grants will be announced shortly.
